Location: DP World Djazair, formerly known as Algiers, is the capital and principal port of Algeria. From 2008 DP World have a 30 year concession to run the port, which handles more than 60 per cent of Algeria's external trade. General overview: The port (deepwater seaport) consists of 3 basins, the Old Port, Agha and Mustapha, with a total of 36 berths, protected by a network of 5 breakwaters. As of Oct 1 2009 all non containerised cargoes have been banned at the port, to reduce shipping and road congestion. Now Djendjen, Mostaganem and Ghazaouet ports deal with containers and car carriers, while Oran, Bejaia, Annaba, Skikda, Arzew and Tenes handle bulk cargo and the other non-container imports. Traffic figures: Approx 11,000,000t of cargo, 530,500TEU and 373,500 passengers annually. Load line zone: Summer. Body of water: The body of water sheltered by these works is 184 hectares divided into 03 successive basins: Basin of the old port 75 ha; Agha basin 35 ha; Mustapha basin 74 ha. The port passes: Vessel access to the port is via: The North pass: allows access to the old port, located between the north pier and the southern spur of the Agha pier with 176 m in width and 12 m deep. Storage Capacities: The port of Algiers has a total storage area of 282,000 m², Open spaces of 232,000 m² 12 stores of 50,000 m² This capacity allows the storage of 120,000 tons of goods, while the average volume unloaded monthly today is 800,000 tons. Access doors: There are nine (09) access doors to the port of Algiers. Dirty Ballast - It refers to a port that may receive dirty ballast contaminated with oil and/or chemicals. The docking quays of 34, they are built according to successive moles going from West to East whose depth varies from 5 m to 10 m. The total length of these quays is 8,352 m. Container Terminal covers an area of 30.3 hectares. It has two 300 m berths with a draft of 9.00 to 11.00 metres. The port of Algiers has a total storage area of 282,000 m², representing 24% of the total surface evenly distributed among the three geographical areas of the port and welcoming merchandise, with 12 stores of 50,000 m². Algeria's rail network is 4,769 km long at the end of 2018 and is being expected to reach 5,941 km by the end of 2020. Recently, Projects of electrification have been started, which should lead to the installation of high-speed trains which should link the most important cities in the country.
