General Description
Location: Bridgetown is located on the SE coast of the Island of Barbados, in the Atlantic, approx 90nm E of the chain of E Caribbean islands. General overview: Bridgetown is the main port serving Barbados and has extensive facilities for handling a variety of cargo. The expansion and improvement of Bridgetown Port, includes the extension of the berthing facilities and construction of small vessel and container berths. Extensions to the harbour have made available, a container park which can accommodate 2,000 containers stacked 2 high, a container berth of 215m in length and a container freight station with a floor area of 8,898m². Containerised cargo now represents 80% of the cargo moving through the port with bulk sugar, molasses, grain and general cargo forming the remainder of cargoes handled. Imports: Mineral fuel, petroleum products, manufactured goods, foodstuffs, machinery, transport equipment. Exports: Mineral fuel and lubricants, foodstuffs and manufactured goods. Traffic figures: Approx 1,000,000t of cargo,72,000TEU, 650 vessels and 500,000 passengers are handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31. Max size: Deep Water Harbour: LOA 244m, beam 31.1m, max draught 11.0m. Esso Oil Pier: LOA 244m, draught 11.6m. Largest vessel handled: "Queen Mary 2", 151,400GT, LOA 345m, draught 9.78m.
