General Description
Location: Iraklion (Heraklion) is located on the N side of the island of Crete.
General overview: The port operates under the name of Heraklion Port Authory SA and consists of 2 areas, the small inner port and the new outer port. The Commercial port (New Outer) is protected by a 2,390 m. breakwater with entrance 250 m. wide. Vessels may berth alongside the north breakwater in depth up to 15.00 m. Old Enetic (Inner) Port: The port can handle vessels up to displacement 300 tons. The entrance is 50 m. wide, depth up to 4.00 m. and is mainly used by fishing boats, small craft and yachts. The ferry port of Heraklion connects the Greek island of Crete with the Greek mainland (Piraeus) and the islands of Halki, Crete, Mykonos, Ios, Thira, Tinos, Kasos, Naxos, Karpathos, Rhodes, Syros, Milos, Anafi and Paros. There is a tanker CBM in Linoperamata Bay, to the W of main port. Exports include raisins, olive oil, wine, citrus, vegetables and fruit. Imports include cereals, machinery, timber and manufactured goods. Extensive storing areas are available for containers' terminal and for storage of general cargoes.
