Location: Itaqui is located on the island of San Luis in the Bay of Sao Marcos. General overview: Modern, fairly sheltered multipurpose port encompassing Itaqui Point, extending to the N as far as Madeira Point, where Ponta da Madeira bulk manganese export terminal is located. In front of Itaqui, at a distance of 400 m. from the quay, is the Island of Guarapira with maximum dimensions of 100 m.x300 m. and stretching in a N – S direction. Porto of Itaqui has seven operational berths, three of which are along a linear quay, as well as a new oil tanker (Cradle 108). The berths have depths ranging from 12 to 19 meters. Berths 103 & 105 are reserved for grain shipments of TEGRAM (Berth 103) and VLI Terminal Portuario de Sao Luis (Berth 105). Ponta da Madeira, situated 1.8nm N of Itaqui, is an iron ore terminal specifically built to handle ore mined from the Carajas region and transported via a rail link of approx 900km to the coast for export. Cargoes handled by the port include petroleum products, aluminum ingots, iron ore and pig iron, fertilizers, wheat, manganese ore, caustic soda, and general cargo. Terminal da Alumar is 5nm S of Itaqui. Main Cargoes Handled: Loading: Bulk manganese ore, pig iron, aluminum ingots. Discharge: Bulk fertilizer, malt, wheat, rice, coal, petroleum products, caustic soda, tallow, cement in bags, general cargo. Telis Terminal: It is a regional collection and distribution center for diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, fuel oil, gas oil, and LPG. Max size: - Itaqui: Approx 165,000DWT, beam 42m, draught 20.0m, air draught no restriction. - Ponta da Maderia: Approx 420,000DWT, LOA 365m, beam 64m, draught 23.0m plus tide, air-draught 22m.
