General Description
Location: Santorini is an island in the Cyclades Group, SE of the greek mainland. The port of Thira (also named Santorini or Athnios) is located on the southwest side of the island and it's quite crowded, as this is where ferries arrive in Santorini.
General overview: There are 2 ports in Santorini; the first port is located in Fira (capital of the island) and the other port is called Athinios and is actually the main port of the island. Cruises to nearby islands, the volcano of Santorini, and the small island of Thirassia depart from the port in Fira. Thira has a deep water anchorage and buoyed mooring area off Fira town for cruise vessels. There is a small Ro-Ro ferry terminal at Athinios Port, to the S of Fira for regular services to Piraeus and a CBM mooring for tankers at the Monolithos Power Station terminal. The port doesn’t have a cruise terminal. Instead, visitors are tendered ashore by small boats.
Traffic figures: Approx. 1,000,000 passengers visit the port annually.
Load line zone: Summer.
Max size: Large cruise vessels anchor off Thira.
