General Description

Location: Wismar is situated in the S part of Wismar Bay, approx 35nm W of Rostock on the Baltic Sea coast of Germany. General overview: As the southernmost German Baltic Sea port, Wismar seaport commands an ideal situation for goods flows in the Baltic Sea, in Germany and all of Europe. The north-south traffic between Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Russia and Central Europe meets with excellent connections for road, rail and sea transport. The modern Port of Wismar is well-suited to handle wood products and logs, with storage capacity of 19 thousand square meters and ample cargo-handling equipment and facilities. Related to wood products and logs are forest products, also a major cargo for the Port of Wismar. Handling general timber cargoes is an increasingly important activity. The Port of Wismar offers covered storage for eight thousand cubic meters and open storage for 21 thousand cubic meters of forest products. The Port of Wismar is well-positioned to handle increasingly important renewable raw materials, including wood by-products and bioenergy-related bulk goods like rapeseed and rape-pellets. The port offers 20 thousand square meters of open storage capacity for renewable raw materials. The port consists of the Overseas Port, Kali (Potash) Port for general/bulk vessels and the Alter Hafen (Old Port) used by fishing vessels (max draught 4.8m), sailing ships and private vessels. 17 berths (plus two pile dolphin berths) are available with the total quay length of 2,830 m. The port handles general cargo, steel, timber, grain, dry bulk cargo, potash, gas oil and chemicals. Traffic figures: Approx 1,870 vessels and 4,100,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA: 240m (tankers 170 m), beam: 35 m, draught: 8.5 m. Depending on water and wind conditions and the equipment of the vessel, 8.7 m draught are possible with a special licence The largest vessel handled: "Jalavijaya", LOA: 206.7 m, beam: 29 m.
