Location: Emden, situated on the River Ems estuary, is Germany's most western seaport. General overview: Having a total quay length of 9 kilometers and a total area of 730 hectares, the port is divided into two areas, the tidal Outer Harbour, Emskai/Emspier and the Inner Harbour (Binnenhafen), which is non tidal and separated by locks. Exports: Major export outlet for vehicles, bulk, general and project cargoes. For the Volkswagen Group, Emden is the home port for automotive distribution. Brand-name paper manufacturers have handled transhipment of forest products such as cellulose, paper and timber via the deep water harbour for decades. In the wind energy sector, the port of Emden has established itself as a strong partner for handling onshore and offshore components. There are also high-security facilities for hazardous and military goods. The non-tidal inner harbour- Germany's largest - can be accessed via two efficient sea locks. The Große Seeschleuse (Large Sea Lock) operates 24x7, and definitely does justice to its name: operators can access some 3,300 m of quayside facilities on the inner harbour, almost all of which have rail links. Locks: Grosse Seeschleuse (Great Sea Lock) (length 260m, width 40m, depth 11.75m) restricts the size of the vessels to LOA 240m and 33m beam. With special permission vessels of LOA 250m and 35m beam may be handled. The largest vessel called at the port: LOA: 237 m, draught: 10.5 m, deadweight: 72,927 t.
