Location: Kavala is located on the S coast of the Greek mainland, opposite the island of Thassos, approx 190nm N of Athens. Port of Kavala – Filippos B is located in Nea Karvali, approx. 4 n.m. east of the city. General overview: Kavala is a small sheltered port encompassing the offshore oil terminal of Prinos, which is situated between Kavala and Thassos. he Kavala Port Authority S.A. is responsible for the management of the four ports in the wider region of Kavala: The Central Port of Kavala “APOSTOLOS PAVLOS”, the Commercial Port «Filippos Β’» in Nea Karvali, the Port of Eleftheres and the Port of Keramoti. Kavala comprises a passenger harbour (Port of Kavala) and a new commercial harbour (Port of Kavala – Filippos B). Handles Ro-Ro, passengers, fishing and leisure craft. Additional private facilities exist for handling petroleum products and fertilisers. The port offers good anchorage, fresh water and has road connections to Thessaloniki and Istanbul. There is a liquefied gas terminal located E of Kavala at Nea Karvali. The development of 'Philippos B' as the commercial side of the port has seen the construction of a 400m long, 12m deep breakwater. Additionally, a N wharf has been completed, adding a further 1,050m to the existing 400m. Principal exports are tobacco, cereals and marble. Traffic figures: Approx 550 vessels, 1,600,000t of cargo and 1,500,000 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: LOA 200 m, draught 11.5 m. Largest vessel: LOA: 240 m, draught: 7.1 m, deadweight: 10202t.
