General Description
Location: Las Palmas, located 2nm S of the NE extremity of the island of Gran Canaria, is between Punta el Nido (28°10'N 015°24'W) and the point on which Ciudad de Las Palmas stands, 4nm S. General overview: Las Palmas, an artificial harbour with a total quay length of 12km, is divided into two areas: Outer Harbour and Inner Harbour. The port area is known as Puerto de La Luz y Las Palmas. It offers facilities for most type of vessels including the largest tankers. Many cruise ships visit the port and a large number of containers are handled. The harbour entrance width is 740m with a depth of 30m. Extensive quayage is available plus provisions, repairs and bunkers. Imports: Include textiles, foodstuffs, general goods, fertilisers, grain and edible oils. Exports: Agricultural produce from the island, fish preserves and cement. Traffic figures: Approx 10,800 vessels, 21,241,170t of cargo, 1,052,700TEU and 1,403,230 passenger handled annually. Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: 555,000DWT. No length or beam restrictions. The maximum draught for vessels bunkering or handling cargo is 22.0m (Reina Sofia-South Dock). Largest vessel handled: Max LOA 351.4m, draught 22.3m, 153,687GT.
