General Description
Location: Busum is located on the N side of Meldorfer Bucht.
General overview: Busum is a NAABSA port. Because of its connection with Suderpiep, it has the best approach of all the ports in Schleswig-Holstein and also, it is hardly affected by ice. The port comprises the Vorhafen (Outer) basin and the Binnenhafen (Inner), with 4 basins. Port handles bulk, including grain; fishing vessels, pleasure craft, passengers and Ro-Ro traffic.
The port covers a total area of 190,000 m² and the already designated expansion area is 330,000 m². The quay length is 2,500 meters. The port currently has about 45 berths for fishing boats, four berths for passenger ships, four berths for government boats, three berths for cargo ships, 120 berths for sport boats as well as a berth for a research vessel and a sea rescue cruiser.
In the port of Büsum, water depths of around 6.70 m can be reached, the maximum permitted draught of ships is 6.50 meters. Ships with a draught of up to 6.00 metres can call at the inner harbour. The quay of the pre-basin (150 meters) and the inner port (410 meters) protected by a barrier (21.50 meters passage width) result in a total length of 560 meters, two of which are 100 meters long ISPS-certified. In the inner harbour there is a ship length restriction to a maximum of 120 meters.
Traffic figures: Approx. 150,000 passengers visit the port annually. 3,200 tonnes of the crabs are handled.
Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
Max size: LOA: 100 m, beam: 20 m, draught: 6.5 m.
The largest vessel called at the port: LOA: 254 m, draught: 5.4 m, deadweight: 4,750 t.
Due to strong tidal streams, care must be taken on arrival when passing breakwater during rising tide. The Inner Harbour is closed by a flood barrier when water level reaches 0.30 m. above high water.
Special permission from Port authorities is required before entering for vessels in distress, carrying explosives or not gas-free.
